Holy Redeemer Church by Menos Arquitectos

Holy Redeemer Church in the tiny town of Los Majuelos stands out for its strength in simplicity and a story in the study of light. Four large slabs of re-enforced concrete stand alongside each other against each other creating asymmetric movement that is both open and sheltered.

Local volcanic stone was used as a raw finish in the interior walls which have been stripped of superfluous decoration. The temple like interior volumes encourage a sense of meditation and reflection whilst also respectfully responding to current economic restraints.

An in-depth study of light has been captured in the buildings activities with the light at first dawn illuminating the baptism font through to noon light at the altar with the end of day light shafts resting on the confessional and the Word. The story depicts the transition from light to dark and life to death.
